Summary

An extraordinary story inspired by the real Women’s Air Raid Defense, where an unlikely recruit and her sisters-in-arms forge their place in WWII history。

Daisy Wilder prefers the company of horses to people, bare feet and salt water to high heels and society parties。 Then, in the dizzying aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Daisy enlists in a top secret program, replacing male soldiers in a war zone for the first time。 Under fear of imminent invasion, the WARDs guide pilots into blacked-out airstrips and track unidentified planes across Pacific skies。

But not everyone thinks the women are up to the job, and the new recruits must rise above their differences and work side by side despite the resistance and heartache they meet along the way。 With America’s future on the line, Daisy is determined to prove herself worthy。 And with the man she’s falling for out on the front lines, she cannot fail。 From radar towers on remote mountaintops to flooded bomb shelters, she’ll need her new team when the stakes are highest。 Because the most important battles are fought—and won—together。

This inspiring and uplifting tale of pioneering, unsung heroines vividly transports the reader to wartime Hawaii, where one woman’s call to duty leads her to find courage, strength and sisterhood。

I really enjoyed this story, listening to the audiobook。 Learning of the historic setting of Hawaii during the Pearl Harbour aftermath, the stong female protagonist who didn't feel like she was the typical woman of that day and the sisterhood that became her family。 It was a well woven historical fiction love story。 I really enjoyed this story, listening to the audiobook。 Learning of the historic setting of Hawaii during the Pearl Harbour aftermath, the stong female protagonist who didn't feel like she was the typical woman of that day and the sisterhood that became her family。 It was a well woven historical fiction love story。 。。。more

Thank you so much BookReporter。com for sending me this very interesting novel of the Women's Air Defense girls during WWII - Radar Girls by Sara Ackerman。 It's the story not only of the women and their training - how they overcame the men's skepticism about whether they could learn RADAR and do the very important job of guiding and tracking the ships and planes approaching the islands。 It's also the story of Daisy Wilder, a young woman who dropped out of high school and worked at the Montgomery Thank you so much BookReporter。com for sending me this very interesting novel of the Women's Air Defense girls during WWII - Radar Girls by Sara Ackerman。 It's the story not only of the women and their training - how they overcame the men's skepticism about whether they could learn RADAR and do the very important job of guiding and tracking the ships and planes approaching the islands。 It's also the story of Daisy Wilder, a young woman who dropped out of high school and worked at the Montgomery horse farm。 She had a way with horses for sure, but was treated very condescendingly by most of the Montgomery family。 Her Dad died in an accident when she was younger and her mother retreated into her own world so Daisy had to really raise herself。 There's a bit of a mystery about how her father died。I thought the author did a very good job of showing how the women were taught and rose to the numerous occasions when life or death hung in the balance, how a sisterhood developed among the women who were doing this very secret and important job, and how each of the women has a story of her own to tell。 Daisy has a huge crush on the son of Mr。 Montgomery, Walker, who is a pilot; Betty's husband is captured by the Japanese, Lei's husband is a gambler, and Fluff finds love in the wrong place。 All four women come from very different walks of life, yet bond together and make it through some very tough times and big challenges。 In the meantime, the author takes you into various aspects of the training, life in bunkers on Hawaii during the war, the life of someone living in a shack on an isolated part of the beach。 And some of the things that women faced then as they do today working with men in power and in the military。 The ending is, however, a bit predictable。 。。。more

A captivating story of a girl, a guy, a horse and, above all, the WARDs—Women’s Air Raid Defense。 A fun romp around the island of Oahu as this complex story of the vital work done by young women taught to plot, track, vector blips on the new technology of radar during WWII unfolds。 A compelling tale of friendship, lies, love and family。 Ackerman’s thorough understanding of the complexities of the WARDs work, the war, and her knowledge of the island makes this a book you can’t put down。 Love her A captivating story of a girl, a guy, a horse and, above all, the WARDs—Women’s Air Raid Defense。 A fun romp around the island of Oahu as this complex story of the vital work done by young women taught to plot, track, vector blips on the new technology of radar during WWII unfolds。 A compelling tale of friendship, lies, love and family。 Ackerman’s thorough understanding of the complexities of the WARDs work, the war, and her knowledge of the island makes this a book you can’t put down。 Love her writing! 。。。more

Actually, closer to 3。5 stars。 I enjoyed the story and learned about another aspect of World War II and the contributions by women。

I picked this up hoping it would be like Daughters of the Night Sky, but it seems to lack the same pizzazz。 There are a lot of characters and it's hard to keep everyone straight—having a character whose forename is Walker and who refers to the protagonist by her surname (Wilder) just makes it all the more confusing。I feel like I'm missing out on some things without a Hawaiian glossary—I usually can't figure them out in context, and Google Translate doesn't seem to help。 Also, I don't know if it' I picked this up hoping it would be like Daughters of the Night Sky, but it seems to lack the same pizzazz。 There are a lot of characters and it's hard to keep everyone straight—having a character whose forename is Walker and who refers to the protagonist by her surname (Wilder) just makes it all the more confusing。I feel like I'm missing out on some things without a Hawaiian glossary—I usually can't figure them out in context, and Google Translate doesn't seem to help。 Also, I don't know if it's my copy, but the way the names are rendered ("Haleakal¯a" versus "Haleakalā", for example) is pretty obnoxious。(view spoiler)[Also, the notion that Daisy falls in love with a guy on the front lines (as mentioned in the description) is a lie—or poor wording, at best。 He is on the front lines, not she (she works for land defense in Hawaii after Pearl Harbor) and vaguely referring to him as the "man she's falling for" is a polite way of saying "the son of her asshole ex-boss", the latter of whom believes she's lower than the sand she walks on。 (hide spoiler)]I'm finishing it, but I wouldn't recommend it to others。 。。。more

I liked this book a lot。 It was a very interesting story about the WARDs, women who were recruited into military service in Hawaii during WWII when the men had to leave their posts to fight。 It was great to learn about this little known part of history (at least to me) and I loved the strong female characters and they bonds they formed。 The second story line with Daisy, the Montgomerys, and Moon was slightly distracting。 I know it gave the story some more personality and color, but at times it a I liked this book a lot。 It was a very interesting story about the WARDs, women who were recruited into military service in Hawaii during WWII when the men had to leave their posts to fight。 It was great to learn about this little known part of history (at least to me) and I loved the strong female characters and they bonds they formed。 The second story line with Daisy, the Montgomerys, and Moon was slightly distracting。 I know it gave the story some more personality and color, but at times it almost seemed to clash with the other important work that was going on。 I might have focused on additional girls' stories instead of fleshing out Daisy's life like that? I also thought the end tied up a little too nicely for my taste in historical fiction。 Overall, worth the read and quite entertaining - I had a hard time putting it down。 。。。more

I love it! I haven’t read too many WWII books set in Hawaii, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, so I appreciated this story very much。 But what I loved the most were the relationships formed within the novel。 The friendships between the women were crafted so beautifully。 They solidified a true sisterhood almost instantly, and stuck together while many doubtful male eyes stared down on them, thinking they were not fit for the job。 The women get themselves into a few sticky situations, but they support one another immensely。 If you need a “girl power” fix, Radar Girls delivers it。 Ackerman’s writing style kept me engaged and enthralled from beginning to end。 I’ll definitely be seeking out her backlist, because I really want to read more of her fascinating stories。 I highly recommend Radar Girls for my fellow historical fiction fans。 It’s available now, and I give it 4/5 stars! 。。。more

Daisy Wilder is a captivating heroine! A girl living on the margins of wealthy Hawaiian society, she is closer to the horses she tends than to the ranchers who own them。 She is accidentally drawn in to a recruiting drive to hire women to staff the advance radar stations that will keep Hawaii and the mainland of the US safe from bomber attacks in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor。There is plenty of history to interest the reader, along with a generous helping of female friendship and romance。I enjoye Daisy Wilder is a captivating heroine! My 3rd Ackerman book in a row — despite the uptick in sappy content (IMHO) the good story makes it worth reading。 All three have been about the Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, but all from a different perspective。 On to one more tomorrow, Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers, which only now I realize is her first book。 Shouldn’t make a difference based on the ones I’ve already read。
